The wines of Victoria: Victoria has over 350 wineries and many more vineyards, more than any other Australian state. Many of the wineries are very small, but the sheer number creates a very diverse and exciting wine experience.
Within Victoria, there are six wine zones and within these zones there are 22 wine regions, many of which you can experience by shopping online at Wines of Victoria. These are:
Around Melbourne
Wine regions: Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Geelong, Sunbury, Macedon Ranges
Western Victoria
Wine regions: Ballarat, Pyrenees, Grampians, Henty
North-West Victoria
Wine regions: Murray Valley/Mildura, Swan Hill
Cental Victoria
Wine regions: Bendigo, Heathcote, Goulburn Valley, Upper Goulburn, Strathbogie Ranges
North-East Victoria
Wine regions: Rutherglen, Beechwoth, Alpine Valleys, King Valley, Glenrowan
South-East Victoria
Wine regions: Gippsland
The most popular wine varieties in Victoria are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Shiraz. Victorian wineries also make Italian wine varieties such as Dolcetto, Barbera, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. Still other varieties made by Victorian wineries are: Botrytised Wines, Sherry and Sparkling wine.
