The wines produced at this estate have the distinction of being the fruits of oldest vines in the Mount Benson region. Wehl is the name of the family who owns this estate, and the first set of Wehls plunged bravely into winemaking when there were no other vineyards in that part of the country. Practically on the beaches of the Great Southern Ocean, Wehl’s Mount Benson produced its first vintage in 1992.
The earth
The lands of Wehl’s Mount Benson are home to plantings of Shiraz, Cabarnet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, all of which have become quite popular among wine lovers and critics. The Mount Benson region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm balmy days cooled off by the sea breezes of the ocean.

The Wehls employ the skills of Leconfield Wines winemaker Paul Gordon who makes the kind of wines that fly off the shelves – quite a few are sold out quickly after they’re released. Their very first vintage was awarded a bronze medal at the Royal Hobart Show for the 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon. Acclaimed wine critic James Halliday has rated Wehl’s Mount Benson Vineyards as the one of the top ten wine estates in the country and the best in the Mount Benson region.
