After years of tending livestock and a potato plantation, the Credaro family now runs a tight viticultural operation on the property that’s been in their family for four generations. Bathed in the Mediterranean glow of the Carbunup region, the Vasse River winery has been producing fine, elegant wines for close to two decades.
Gold
The Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards thrive in the dry summers and the cool winters. Their very first vintage of Chardonnay won the illustrious gold medal at the Mount Barker Wine Show in 1993. Vasse River also tends vineyards of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Merlot and Shiraz.
Winning wine
While almost half of the Credaros’ wine is produced for export, the other half is successful on home soil. At 2007 wine shows in Perth and Melbourne, Vasse River’s Beach Head Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay outshone its competitors. Wine critic and author James Halliday was also taken with Vasse River wines, especially the Chardonnay and Cabernet Merlot.
Expert hands
Besides the dedication and passion the Credaros have for the wine business, they also have best known winemakers in the industry on their team. Known widely for her extensive experience and unerring palate, senior winemaker Sharna Kowalczuk and her team are focused on perfecting the balance and structure of each wine. Under Sharna’s keen eye, Vasse River produces 5000 cases a year, 45% of which is exported to the United States.
