The people at Twelve Acres Winery don’t believe in blending wines – their offerings are straight Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. They also specialise in the less common red variety, Cabernet Franc. The winery is situated in the middle of the box iron-bark forest, just 17km from Nagambie in Victoria region.
Specially selected
Owners Peter and Jana Prygodicz pride themselves on providing their clients with a unique taste experience in every bottle. Their grapes are grown by a selected number of winegrowers who allocate special blocks on their property to Twelve Acres fruit. The vintage was the Shiraz of 1990, and in 1994 Twelve Acres opened its winery cellar door.
Smoothing the rough edges
Peter and Jana are also the principle winemakers. They’re involved in every step of the process, from the selection of the fruit to controlling the amount of additives going into the wine (which is kept to a minimum). The style of the winemaking is fairly traditional with open vat fermentation for around two weeks. Malolactic fermentation ensures there are no unwanted by-products like histamines. Barrel fermentation for longer periods (two to three years) helps to “smooth out” any harshness or tannic flavours.
Small and exclusive
Twelve Acres produces about 300 cases a year, all of which are sold in Australia. They choose to stay off the competition circuit now that they’re better known, but when they introduced themselves to the wine community in the mid-90s, the Twelve Acres Shiraz took home many medals and accolades.
