Redbox Vineyard and Winery

Redbox Vineyard and Winery makes its wines from the vineyards grown on the Wildfell Estate just 45 minutes from Melbourne’s city centre. Wildfell became an official wine estate in 1986, and Redbox took advantage of the mature vines to produce their first vintage in 2004.

Situated in Kangaroo Ground in the west of the Yarra Valley, the eight acres at Widlfell were home to plantings of just Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Riesling when it got started in 1986. Since then, new vineyards have been added. Its location in the Yarra provides for a warm, sometimes hot, climate with a little cool relief in the evenings. These conditions are perfect for cultivating the strong, robust flavours of the Cabernet and Chardonnay, yet equally suited to the more subdued Riesling fruit.

Redbox is also known for producing Mourvedre, one of the lesser-known varieties, but it’s their Chardonnay, Cabernet and Shiraz that have made an impression on wine lovers and critics. Redbox is about more than just straight whites and reds: they also produce sparkling wines, fortified wines and an interesting Ice Cabernet sweet wine.

Winemaker Phil Kelly from Kellybrook Winery is contracted to make the wine at Redbox. He takes a fruit-forward approach to all the wines, showcasing the high calibre of the Wildfell grapes in every bottle.

Redbox Vineyard and Winery doesn’t seek testimonials, but their wines have won more than their share of medals and awards since 2004’s first vintage. Redbox Winery produces 2000 cases a year, none of which are for export.
