For nearly 40 years, Mount View Estate in the Hunter Valley has been home to some of the best wines coming out of the region. Some of the first Verdelho grapes in the Hunter region were harvested here. In addition to the Verdelho, the current owners, the Burgess family, also tends plantings of Merlot, Pinot Noir, Semillon, Chardonnay and Shiraz.
Mature and warm
Lying at the foot of the Brokenback Mountain Range, the soil of the vineyards is rich with volcanic deposits. The maturity of the vines and the warm climate in the area make for interesting, distinctive wines. Janelle Zerk is the principle winemaker. All grapes are hand-picked from the vines and Janelle is directly involved in the winemaking process.
Showers of praise
Mount View Estate produces 3000 – 4000 cases annually, none of which are exported. This is no reflection on the quality of their wines though – their Verdelho has been making a big impression on critics and wine lovers, and their Shiraz, Chardonnay and Merlot have also received many accolades.
Sweet
Mount View Estate also produces dessert wines like Tawny Port, liqueur Verdelho and Muscat. Their range also includes Limestone Creek wines, named for the adjacent vineyard property the owners purchased in 2004.
