Just 15 minutes from the town of Hobart in Tasmania, Moorilla Estate is known as the pioneer of the island’s wine industry. It was the first to plant Pinot Noir, now the most successful grape type grown in Tasmania. Claudio Alcorso was the first owner and harvested the first vintage in 1962. Current owner David Walsh calls the wine estate a “cultural haven” where the art of winemaking continues to thrive and develop.
Sea breeze
The Moorilla grounds are situated along the Derwent River in the Derwent Valley where it enjoys the cool Tasmanian climate with southerly sea breezes blowing during the ripening period. David and winemaker Conor van der Reest, carefully cultivate wines that reflect the history of the estate as well as the modern winemaking techniques. Their style is artistic and labour-intensive with the intention of creating complex, interesting flavours.
Concentrated care
Moorilla Estate produces small batches of wines, which enjoy more attention from the winemaking team. The primary grape type grown on the estate is Pinot Noir, with smaller plantings of Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Moorilla Estate’s Muse Pinot Noir is particularly successful.

None of the 10,000 cases produced annually are for export, and while they’re enjoyed in restaurants on the mainland, none of the wines are available in wine shops. Don’t despair though: you can easily order Moorilla Estate’s excellent wine varieties online.
