Although the first Kalleske wines were only produced in 2002, the property has been in the Kalleske family for an incredible seven generations. A family-run business in every sense, John and Lorraine Kalleske own the land while their sons Troy and Tony handle the winery. The land was always used to cultivate grapes for wine, but they were sold under contract until the Kalleskes decided to start making their own wine.
Family experience
The Kalleske property spans 120 acres divided between plantations of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Durif, Petit Verdot, Zinfandel, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. Troy Kalleske is the principle winemaker. With his father’s experience in tending vineyards, Troy makes wines in the traditional way with minimal interference with the wines’ natural flavours.
Young gun
From beginning to end, everything is estate-grown to cultivate authentic wines with genuine character. Kalleske Wines is also a certified organic winery. Every year the Kalleskes produce about 8000 cases, 40% of which are exported to countries all over the world.
In recognition of the exceptional Kalleske stock, Troy managed to scoop the award for Barossa Winemaker of the Year 2008 and was also named Australia’s Young Gun of Wine. Respected wine critic James Halliday awarded the estate five stars, calling it one of the best in the country.
Exceptional wines
The estate’s location in the Barossa Region, combined with those old vineyards still producing rich, complex wines, has brought attention to the Kalleske’s Shiraz. The Kalleske Greenock Shiraz, named for the creek running through the property, is their best-known wine. Their Old Vine Grenache and Clarry's Grenache Shiraz have also caused a stir among critics and wine lovers.
