Sue Trott has been the owner of Five Geese wines since 1998, but vineyards have been growing and yielding fruit here for over 100 years now. The Five Geese property is near the gorge of the Onkaparinga River, just 12km from the beaches of St Vincent Gulf and Maslin’s Beach.
Family affair
Along with her son Jonathon (who doesn’t drink wine!), Sue carefully tends the Blewitt Springs vineyards that produce her award-winning Shiraz and Shiraz Grenache blend wines. The vineyards sit above the nearby floor of the McLaren Valley. The Mediterranean climate is cool thanks to the sea breezes coming in from the gulf.
Slow and cool
Longer, cooler ripening periods give way to smooth, elegant wines from the Shiraz and Grenache vines. Five Geese is best known for its Shiraz and Shiraz Grenache blends, both of which have won high praise from the wine community’s experts and critics.
Five Geese, fine wine
Mike Farmilo is the principle winemaker for Five Geese wines, a seasoned wine expert who also judges wine shows. Like the slow, easy ripening of the grapes, Mike gives the wines the time they need, preferring to allow them to mature and develop in oak before bottling. From the 2000 cases produced annually, 33% is exported to the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, the United States and Canada.
