Coonandry Wines have kept it simple: they produce one red wine and one white wine. They haven’t entered any shows and have no idea what the critics make of their Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They must be doing something right because since the first vintage in 1996, their customers keep coming back with better and better things to say about their wines.
Coonandry Wines is situated on the northern slopes of the New South Wales wine region, just four kilometres north of Coonabarabran. Surrounded by valleys and nestled between the white gum trees, the winery is almost invisible to people who aren’t looking for it. This is part of the wine estate’s appeal, and although it’s not known to many wine enthusiasts, the wine produced here is really something special.
Established in 1993, the vineyards span five acres with mixed plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Andrew Margan, renowned wine expert in the New South Wales region with his own wine label, is the principle winemaker at Coonandry Wines. Andrew is known for his deft touch, and so the Coonandry Wines are made to be strong, fruity and perfectly balanced with a pronounced difference in the taste.
Their wines are described as strong yet easy-drinking, which isn’t always easy to achieve with two particularly robust grape varieties. The total production varies from year to year, and although none of the cases are sent overseas, Coonandry Wines is quickly developing a following in the wine community – whether they’d like to or not.
Try the elusive Coonandry Wines’ Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.
