The Cape Horn Vineyard has really grown up since the vines were planted. First used as a vineyard for just Shiraz in the 19th century, the Cape Horn Vineyard is now home to extensive plantations of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Durif, Marsanne and Zinfadel in addition to the Shiraz still growing there.
Young achiever
The Cape Horn Vineyard is in Goulburn Valley wine region which is well-known for the distinctive Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Marsanne produced there. Established in 1993, this relatively young farm has already won a series of awards for almost all its wines, including four gold medals for its Cabernet Sauvignon, Marsanne, Durif and sparkling Shiraz/Durif blend.
Flavour notes
Marsanne, although little known, was one of the first vines ever planted in the Goulburn Valley. Critics describe the Cape Horn’s 2007 Marsanne as full-bodied and flavourful, saying it upholds the old, fine tradition of Marsanne cultivation in the area. Typical of the region, Cape Horn’s Cabernet Sauvignon is big and robust, balancing the flavours of fruit well with the wooded notes from the French and American oak barrels.
Thanks to the expertise of winemaker John Ellis, most of the other wines at Cape Horn Vineyard enjoy the same kind of praise. He takes a European approach to wine-making for clean, fresh, fruit-driven flavours. Cape Horn Vineyard produces 2500 cases annually with plans to export to China in the near future.
