Imagine being only seven years old and already as accomplished as those double or three times your age. That’s the case of Belalie Bend Vineyard – despite it being one of the youngest wineries in the country, it is already the highest-rated winery in the Southern Flinders Ranges (according to the rating scale of respected wine critic James Halliday). Belalie Bend enjoys fertile, loamy soil and the temperate climate of the area. The three main grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot.
Excellent Shiraz
Owners Guy and Emma Bowley established the winery themselves. Belalie Bend’s Shiraz is widely known as an excellent wine for its wonderful character, typical of wines from the Southern Flinders region. Principle winemaker Emma really enjoys working in a small winery where she enjoys hands-on experience in making her wine. The wines leaving the winery are praised for the expert blending and perfect concentration – well done Emma!
Small numbers
Belalie Bend grows equal amounts of Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Mataro and Muscat of Alexandria on their property. Belalie Bend produces 380 cases a year, and the smaller numbers mean that more goes into every bottle leaving the winery.
A delicious rarity
Belalie Bend is a private family winery so visitors to their winery have the opportunity to talk to the owners and everyone directly involved in the wine-making process.
This may be a new establishment in a new region, but Belalie Bend is showing enormous promise to become one of the most successful wineries in the region, and certainly in the whole of wine-producing Australia.
