Swan Valley Wine Region

Known as the oldest wine region in Western Australia, the lands of the Swan Valley were first tended to produce grapes for both wine and fruit in the early 1800s. Well-known names like Houghton and Sandalford have their origin during these times.

A plentiful supply of gold in those days kept the region above water while others faltered, and when the gold rush ceded, people ploughed their money into establishing wineries in the area. A mere 20 minutes from the city of Perth, Swan Valley is a popular getaway for city folk wanting to spend a tranquil weekend away among the vineyards. Most of the vineyards are located along the banks of the Swan and Avon rivers and around the towns of Yanchep and Gingin.

The first wines produced in the area were made from Chenin Blanc grapes. Jack Mann, a famous wine pioneer in the region, used them to craft white Burgundy-style wines at a time when red table wines were more popular. Many Europeans settled in the region after the First World War, hence the names of some of the estates. After the Second World War, wine consumption increased tenfold and significantly boosted the region's wine production numbers.

Thanks to ocean breezes and the Mediterranean climate in the area, the Chenin Blanc vines still do well here, as well as plantings of Chardonnay, Semillon, Verdelho, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The climate is also perfect for the production of fortified wines, the most popular grape types for this variety being Muscat Gordo Blanco and Muscadelle.

Swan Valley is known as one of the best regions in which to experience the cuisine and wine at winery restaurants. The wine culture is lively here. The region hosts the Taste of the Valley festival every year in April. The Shiraz and Seafood Weekend is a definite on any wine lover's calendar.

The wines from Little River Winery are a good introduction to the Swan Valley region.
