Everything about South Burnett is attractive: its close proximity to the city of Brisbane, its location just under the majestic Bunya Mountains and the fact that it's actually warm during winter. It's close to the coast and features beautiful rain forests.
The area enjoys a sub-tropical climate with high levels of rainfall during the growing season. The Bjelke-Petersen Dam provides irrigation during the dry months. The soil is rich and fertile with volcanic deposits.
For wine lovers, it also has prominence as Queensland's first official wine region. The first vineyards were planted in the 1990's, and the combination of its location and geographical features makes it the perfect getaway for people from the city.
Probably the most prominent wine in the region is Verdelho, dry and crisp with the slight fruity tones common to almost all the fine wines grown in the region.
Most of the wineries are smaller, boutique wineries producing Verdelho, a distinctive Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and many other red wine blends. Some wineries like the Kingsley Grove Estate produce lesser known varieties, like the light, easy-drinking Sangiovese and a Chambourcin that ripens earlier in the season than other reds. Fortified wine is also popular in South Burnett with many wineries producing liqueurs, ports and sweet Muscats.
