The Perth Hills wine region is located just outside the city of Perth, running from the town of Bindoon in the north to the Serpentine Reservoir in the south. Three rivers flow through the area, namely the Swan, Avon and Helena, providing irrigation in the five valleys that form part of the region. The wineries in the northern part of the region are clustered around smaller towns like Wooroloo, Chidlow and Parkerville. In the south you'll find vineyards around Darlington, where the first vines were planted in the 1800s.
The undulating dips and rises give way to many diverse geographical features and soil types, which in turn makes for an interesting variety of grape types flourishing in Perth Hills. Soil on the slopes of the valleys is loamy with traces of ironstone, while soil in the northern areas is rich and clayey. The unique topography also means that various climates prevail, but largely the whole area experiences a Mediterranean climate with wet, rainy winters and long, hot summers. Depending on the altitude, some vineyards in the valleys also experience frost during winter and early spring.
Being so close to a major city, the Perth Hills wine region is a favourite getaway, especially in summer since it's slightly cooler than in Perth itself. The excellent wines are also a major attraction, particularly because there's such a diverse and interesting range on offer. Most of the wineries in Perth Hills are boutique wineries offering small numbers of less common wines like Grenache, Viognier, Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Muscat. The better-known varieties like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced in abundance.
One of the most popular wineries in this region is Millbrook Winery.
