Known for its diverse climate and soil types, the Mudgee region boasts the legacy of traditional wines alongside exciting new ones. Mudgee is known for its beautiful landscapes and rich, volcanic soil. The area around the town of Mudgee is popular tourist destinations with most of the vineyards located just north of the town itself.
Settlers
When the first white immigrants arrived to Mudgee in the 1820s, they brought their viticultural skills with them and applied what they knew to the foreign soil. The German settlers diligently tended their vineyards and by the 1860s there were a number of commercial vineyards established in the area. The wine industry in Mudgee experienced resurgence in the 70s with big corporations establishing themselves in the region. This continued steadily for 20 years.
Climate and geography
The Great Dividing Range has a big influence on the climate in the Mudgee region. Its altitude of about 450m means it doesn’t suffer the extreme heat typical of areas lying that far north. However, while it is still quite warm, the cool summer evenings bring welcome relief and helps extend the ripening process. Rain falls during spring and summer. The Cudgegong River is a source of additional irrigation.
Wines of the region
Mudgee wines include Semillon, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, but it’s the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz that have made an impression on the wine community. Mudgee’s Chardonnay is its strongest white variety, featuring full, strong flavours with fruity overtones. Interesting Italian varieties like Barbera and Sangiovese also do well in this area.
