Named for the river that runs right through it, the Margaret River wine region with its diverse climates allows for different varieties to flourish in different areas. It is hugely successful both as a wine-producing region and as a tourism destination.
First plantings
Legend has it that the first vines were planted by Italian immigrants. Their first attempts were successful and they provided their families with a steady supply of table wine. The Margaret River wine region is considered on of the newer wine regions after it was declared suitable for wine cultivation in the late 60s. Since then production picked up and today some of the finest wines in the country are cultivated here. It was officially registered in 1996. The Margaret River wine region is one of the biggest wine districts in Australia but only contributes a small percentage of national wine production.
Climate and geography
The Margaret River wine region lies between Cape Naturaliste and Cape Leeuwen, about 30 inland from the Indian Ocean. The region is larger than others and is (unofficially) further divided into six sub-regions. This region is so large that different climates prevail in different parts, which makes it ideal for not just one but many types of wine. The ocean being close has a big influence on the Margaret River wine region and its climate. Cool breezes blow in from the sea, and its rain comes in autumn and winter.

Wines of the region
The Margaret River wine region climate makes it home to different varieties and styles of wine. When it was declared fit for wine production in the 60s, government officials felt that the soil-type and climate was close to that of Burgundy in France. Today, the Margaret River wine region is seen as the most forward-thinking and innovative wine community in Australia. Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc are some of the most successful varieties coming out the area.
