Despite its size, the Canberra wine region is one of the most interesting and exciting regions in the country. The first vineyards were only planted in the 1990s, but the few wineries in the area, most of them small boutique wineries, have already produced some impressive wines. Although the northern end of Lake George forms part of the region, it doesn't have an influence on the climate, which varies between dry, hot summers, rainy springs and relatively cool winter periods. As is the case with many inland wine regions, the spring-time frost can cause some damage to the vines.
Wine Varieties
Canberra boasts a diverse range of varietals owing to a strong European influence in the area, including Riesling, Viognier, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Semillon. Riesling and Chardonnay are the most popular single varietals, while some excellent blends feature interesting combinations like the Shiraz Viognier blend.
Wineries
The entire Canberra region is a cluster of smaller towns and wineries, all within half an hour from each other. A wine lover might take a drive through the region and visit the wineries around the northern end of Lake George, an area influenced by the French winemakers visiting the area to learn about Australian wine. In Murrumbateman and Yass are holidaymakers' heavens with many guesthouses and restaurants, as well as being home to more wineries.
Wineries like Dionysus Wines and Long Rail Gully Wines hail from the Canberra wine region.
